Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon.com, and he is also the company's present Chairman and CEO. Amazon.com is a leader in the e-commerce industry. The website is the world's largest internet retailer in any category, selling a wide range of products like books, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys, jewelry and downloads.  The company make billions of dollars in sales every year. In 2012, Amazon reported making more than $61 billion in sales, which was an increase of $13 billion from their 2011 sales revenue.

Jeff Bezos graduated from Princeton University with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. After working for 2 other companies, Bezos worked at D. E. Shaw, a firm in Wall Street specializing in developing computer science applications for the stock market. After reading a report about the future of the internet which said that internet commerce was growing at 2,300 %, Bezos decided to start planning an Internet business.

In 1994, Bezos left his employment as vice-president of D.E. Shaw and moved to Seattle, Washington. It was during the drive from New York to Seattle that he started writing up the Amazon business plan. Bezos created a list of 20 products which he believed were good for selling online. After making his analysis, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos finally decided that his new business would sell books online.


He settled on books for a number of reasons such as the huge demand for literature around the world, the low cost of books and the vast number of book titles that were already published in print. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon officially in his garage in 1995. The company began as a web store selling books online. In just the first 2 months after launching, Amazon.com had sold books in all 50 states of the U.S and in 45 foreign countries around the world. Wikipedia reports that at that time Amazon was already making $20,000 per week in book sales.

Amazon first offered stock to the public on May 15, 1997, and made it's first profit of $5 million in the the fourth quarter of 2001, with total revenues of over 1 billion dollars. That was the beginning of the huge profitability that Amazon.com was about generate, becoming the biggest retailer online, and making it's founder Jeff Bezos have a massive net worth in the billions and credited as an entrepreneur who played a key role in the growth of e-commerce.
